The Blesberg The Blesberg Mountain in the Hangklip Range is only one of two climbing dune systems, formed by a sediment pathway in the Western Cape, that function naturally. It was declared a South African Natural Heritage Site in 1987. The source of this dune system is the sea and sand from Silversands Beach that is moved by south easterly winds onto the dunefield at the foot of the Blesberg and therefore up the slopes to form a climbing dune. Vegetation on this system is unique due to the mixing of marine sediment which is alkaline and weathered sandstone which is acidic. Four vegetation communities (lime stone, acid seepage, dune thicket including milkwoods, and normal mountain fynbos. |
