The CPU was established in June 2002 under the leadership of the Western Cape Nature Conservation Board with seed funding from the WWF-US, the WWF-Table Mountain Fund and the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund. The CPU is fast becoming a 'one-stop-shop' for biodiversity information and its main function is to ensure that high quality, up-to-date, spatial biodiversity information, based on data from a variety of reputable institutions, is easily accessible to inform: 1.Conservation Planning; 2.Land-use management, spatial planning, integrated development plans and frameworks; 3.Development proposals in critical areas such as agriculture, urban planning, tourism, water supply and mining; and 4.Appropriate research to enhance service delivery.
